Location:
Stevensweert is an old fortified town on an island between two Maas arms, the Grensmaas and the Oude Maas. Together with Ohe and Laak, Stevensweert forms the "Island in the Maas", a river island sandwiched between the Old Maas, the Meuse and the Maasplassen.
Stevensweert (Staeveswaert) has a rich history. The street plan recalls the times of fortification; like spokes in a wheel, the streets run to the centre. The adjacent Hompesche molen is a beautiful natural monument built in 1721. The tallest mill in Limburg has six floors. Nowadays, it also has a terrace. The location is an excellent setting for cycling and walking tours. One of the most popular routes is a lap around the Molenplas.
Besides the cosy terraces, cafés and restaurants, there are some basic facilities in Stevensweert, such as a primary school, childcare centre, GP, physio, dentist, sports hall, football and tennis club and various other associations. For extensive facilities and shops, one can divert to the nearby towns of Maasbracht and Echt. Due to its location near the A2 motorway, the cities of Roermond, Sittard and Maastricht are also easily accessible.
