HELIOS (monument description)
A SHOP (art shop) with an ATELIERWONING above it, built in 1895-1897. Built by order of M. Büttinghausen, who established his 'photographic studio' on the two upper floors. His name appears in mosaic on the frieze above the ground floor. Known as 'Building Helios', the whole building was built in the Art Nouveau style to the design of architect G. van Arkel. The design was submitted to the architectural competition of the World's Fair in Paris in 1900, where it won a bronze medal.
The reliefs were created by the artists Van den Bossche and Crevels. The building has been remodelled several times. The front facade of the building faces the Spui; the side facade faces Voetboogstraat. As early as 1899, a narrow gable section was added to the building on the right side of the stairwell windows on Voetboogstraat. This widened the side façade. In 1903 the courtyard was covered and in 1909 Van Arkel converted the interior into the lunchroom 'Maison Ledeboer', which would close its doors in 1969 as 'Formosa'.
