Description

Unique and generous living in a former school building, with the possibility of a home office or practice. In Schimmert, one of the highest (church) villages in the Netherlands, stands the former Roman Catholic primary boys' school, which until 2010 was known as the Remigius House, not to be confused with the nearby Remigius Farm. The original year of construction is 1938, recognised among other things by the expressionist details that make the building a beautiful sight.

Building history shows that the school building was originally built with five classrooms. Due to the increasing number of children, an extension was later built, with an additional classroom and sanitary facilities. In the 1970s, the extension was enlarged due to its new function as a social facility. Using old photos, the building was restored to its old state as exactly as possible. After demolishing the last extension, the old walls were put back on the existing foundation. The wooden window frames were recreated in the original style and the garden wall with fence on the street side was restored to its original state.

Fortunately, many original features have been retained, from colourful stained-glass windows to wall and floor tiles. Many children's feet have walked through the front porch, hall and corridor towards the classrooms for years. The rooms at the front are in use sitting room and master bedroom, with high ceilings and beautiful light through the large windows. The rear part of the property has a loft-like layout with a living room, kitchen and one (possibly two) bedroom(s). Of course, it is also ideal and can be used as a workspace or children's play area. Furthermore, a storage/laundry room, a bathroom and a utility room have been created on the site of the toilets. The upstairs attic with beautiful rafters offers the possibility of multiple bedrooms and bathrooms.

Surprising are the adjoining bedrooms, two in total. The dividing walls provide privacy, while the sense of space and light are not lost. The first sleeping space is currently furnished with a double bed and the second space as a seating area. Of course, these rooms also lend themselves as workspaces or play areas for the children.

On the other side of the corridor are the utility room, bathroom, a storage/laundry room and a toilet room. The bathroom is very bright and spacious with stylish tiling, unusual taps and beautiful sanitary ware. Not lavish, but understated and of high quality. You have access to a wall-hung toilet, urinal, two washbasins, a freestanding bath and a generous walk-in shower.

The utility room, under the marble top with gold-coloured sink, has space for a dishwasher. The storage room, also with a sink, houses the washing equipment. Both rooms are remarkably bright, thanks to large windows in the side wall.

At the beginning of the hall, opposite the former director's room, is the toilet room with an original granito floor. The director's room, with beautiful built-in cupboards, is currently used as a double bedroom. The classrooms at the front are in use as sitting room and office space, both of large size. Fine elements in the sitting room are the fixed cupboards, the colourful stained glass and the wooden floor on which many children have sat wobbling... with their feet and perhaps the legs of their chairs.

- Attic
Under the beautiful trussed roof is an impressive attic space, which is used as storage and hobby room. Given the floor space and high ridge, it is possible to create additional bedrooms and bathrooms here. Or do you give a different interpretation to this vaster space?

Garden:
Several French doors, including in the hallway, give access to the beautiful garden where the garden wall has been retained. What used to be a playground is now a garden with a large lawn and beautiful trees. Privacy is abundant, as is the warmth of the sun, and from different positions you have the opportunity to admire the beautiful school building. The front garden, with two fine trees and the restored garden wall, is also well worth a visit. There is parking for two cars on private property, near the left part of the plot.

A right of way applies to the gravel path on the right, towards the transformer house and the 'disaster post'. Via this path, you reach the generous garage/barn, where residents currently park their cars.

Location:
Schimmert (Sjömmert) is located very centrally in South Limburg with excellent connecting roads towards Maastricht, Heerlen and Sittard; including via the nearby A2 and A76 motorways. The village is surrounded by meadows, farmland, Ravensbos nature reserve and farmhouses. There are many beautiful walking and cycling routes just a stone's throw away, with charming villages and beautiful views.

The village is home to several amenities including several shops, cafes, restaurants, a GP surgery, playground, sports complex and a primary school. Schimmert is characterised by a rich club life and since 2009 the 'BredeSchool Schimortera' has housed the primary school, library, out-of-school care and a playgroup. Since 2017, Schimmert has had a new multifunctional community centre, located on the also renovated Oranjeplein.
