A giant red beech tree in Almen's Dorpsstraat marks the driveway of the stately 'Huis te Almen'. The current owners bought this national monumental country house in 1990. Huis te Almen was built in 1846 in a pure, symmetrical style, without much embellishment. Above the slightly forward central risalit is an ornate dormer as icing on the cake. The solemn house is located on the outskirts of the village, amidst an extremely charming and very orderly park of 2,600 m², most of which extends to the rear. Lush flowerbeds surround a tight lawn, several delightful terraces, a gazebo covered with fragrant roses, some magnificent, old acacia trees and, behind them, nature reserve 'Het Elger'. Residents can enjoy this idyll in total privacy, as the house and park are screened from Dorpsstraat by a high hedge. The semi-circular driveway, with crunchy gravel and a driveway on either side, brings visitors right to the front door. Behind it lies much beauty.

When the owners bought the house 32 years ago, it was in a desolate state. With much love and respect for its history, it was renovated and equipped with comfort. Central heating was installed, the kitchen, toilets and bathrooms were renewed, the wooden floors in the living areas were restored, the hallway and hallway were fitted with a beautiful Carrara marble tile floor with underfloor heating, and almost everything in the house was tackled and structurally improved. A long and intensive process, but step by step Huis te Almen regained its grandeur. The living area of about 450 m², spread over three floors, makes this house an ideal and very special family residence. On the ground floor, to the left and right of the hallway are two almost identical parlours with fireplaces, real window sills and high ceilings. One salon has French doors to the garden. The cosy dining room with fireplace is at the back left of the house. On the other side is the kitchen, which seems to have been plucked straight out of a southern French manor house, with fireplace and underfloor heating under the antique tiles. In later years, the house was extended in style at the back with a large garden room with French doors and a stone staircase leading to the garden. Thanks to the incident northern light, it is ideal as a studio and/or workspace. The house is connected to fibreglass. In the hall, next to the toilet, there is a real safe. There is also a vaulted standing cellar room, where your wine stock can mature at exactly the right, natural temperature. Upstairs are four bedrooms and two well-kept bathrooms, one with access to a large roof terrace above the studio, with wide views over the garden and the nature reserve beyond. On either side of the double sinks are doors to a separate w.c. and a wardrobe. The second floor comprises a neatly finished attic space with a dormer window at the front. Very suitable to create a studio flat or several bedrooms and a bathroom. The garage offers space for two cars and has a separate storage room with an attic over the whole.

House at Almen is an exceptionally elegant and attractive country house in a village that has much to offer. The surroundings are enchantingly beautiful, with a vast, wooded walking area across the small river De Berkel. There is a primary school, a splendid swimming pool, a tennis club and a supermarket. But life in Almen is mostly peaceful and quiet. Occasionally you hear the clattering of the storks that live here, a roaring horse and sometimes even several. 'Then a hunting party passes through the street,' laughs the owner. 'Other than that, you hear nothing here. No traffic, no planes. It's a paradise.' The picturesque village of Almen lies in the wonderfully beautiful Berkel Valley, practically on the banks of the small river of the same name. It is an area where nature prevails and beautiful estates and castles can be found. But also places like Lochem and the historic Hanseatic city of Zutphen. The Lochem Golf and Country Club can be reached in just ten minutes and the A1 slip road near Deventer within twenty minutes.
