The traditional Dutch picture could not be more idyllic: a scaffolding mill on top of a traditional sawmill, the water at the front and behind a view all the way to the horizon. Only the 'woesh, woesh' of the sails breaks the silence.
In 1846, the Anna Paulownapolder, named after the Russian wife of King William II, was the last polder to be reclaimed in the Kop van Noord-Holland area - with private money, for that matter. At the heart of the polder is the village of the same name along the basin of the Oude Veer, which is connected to the Wadden Sea via the sluices of the Amstelmeer. Until 1912, a polder mill on the other side of the Oude Veer ensured that the villagers kept their feet dry. That mill died, just like many other mills that were no longer necessary due to technical progress and were not yet valued as cultural heritage. But thanks to the passion of one passionate builder, another mill was built in 2002 on the same spot along the Oude Veer. For the thatched octagon - or rather the 'body' of the mill - he used a disassembled polder mill from 1892, which had been stored for many years. The rest is all new construction, with all the comforts and technical gadgets that go with it. But if you don't know any better, you could bet that the mill has been here for centuries, as perfectly authentic as it looks.
Leonide looks like a scaffolding mill with a traditional saw shed. The scaffolding is the circuit around the mill, the elongated saw shed is where trees turned into planks. Not in this mill, of course. It is true that the mill is built 'rotating', but it is not 'milling', as it is so beautifully called. And behind the black tarred, pot covered appearance of the saw shed is a spacious (269 m2) and very luxurious house. The heart is formed by a delightful living room right underneath the octagonal, which is reflected in the shape. The view from the conservatory over the farmlands behind is phenomenal. In the wing to the left of the living room we find a country-style kitchen, office and/or hobby rooms and a utility room providing access to the two garages at the head of this wing. On the other side of the living room we find the master suite - with dressing room and bathroom - and the swimming pool with sauna.
The enormous attics above the two wings house the heat recovery system and the 'brain' of the central vacuum system. Technology has not been cut back anyway: a top-of-the-range sound system, underfloor heating, sublime insulation, electric blinds, a remote-controlled gate, automatic garage doors, et cetera.
From the hall a staircase leads to the first floor on the eight side. Here we find two bedrooms and a bathroom. Another staircase up and you can step outside, on the scaffolding. Walk to the front and you will see on the other side of the water the cozy Anna Paulowna, with schools, shops etc. Look a little to the right and you will see the marina Amsteldiep, perfect for water sports enthusiasts. Walk further, clockwise and you will see... nothing. Well, call it 'nothing'. What you see is to be quiet: vast fields, a farm here and there, a row of poplars, ditches and country roads - a landscape that seems to be designed with a ruler for order, peace and regularity.
And above it the clouds that inspired the most famous painters. Every day different, every day beautiful. Of course there is a practical side to living in a mill. You either have to be a lover or find a lover who will run the mill for you, even if it is not really 'in operation'. Because a stationary mill is a dead mill. And in this landscape, where the seasons are so palpable, that 'woesh, woesh' indicates the rhythm of life.
