Description

A real paradise.

Wenum-Wiesel lies north of Apeldoorn, near the Het Loo Palace. Although the two hamlets are named as one, they are separated by the road from Apeldoorn to Vaassen, with Wenum located on the east side and Wiesel on the west.
Wiesel lies embraced by the Koninklijke Houtvesterij Het Loo (royal forestry lands), which is the largest uninterrupted forested area in the Netherlands with a surface area of 9,700 hectares.

This is where we find the De Wijsßelsche Encke estate along the unpaved part of the Wieselse Enkweg.
The central part of the estate – listed under the Dutch Nature Conservation Act – comprises an impressive farmhouse built in the so-called “hall house” architectural style, dating back to 1838 (municipal listed building), as well as the former and now reconfigured thatched deep litter stable, the former baking shed, and a haystack built in a matching style in 2010 and which offers space for multiple cars.

The farmhouse, stable, and baking shed were restored to a very high standard and with a great eye for detail in 2008. A landscape architect transformed the plot into parklike gardens with beech hedges, flower gardens, a herb garden, and several terraces. The landscape consisting of woodland, pasture land, and hedgerows, as well as the vast sightlines, are completely restored. The meadow, left untouched to let wildflowers bloom, is waving in the wind. Additionally, the property includes an orchard with standard fruit trees and an avenue lined with nut trees. It is a landscape where roe deer and badgers can roam freely. Behind the farmhouse are an outdoor riding arena and a large plot of grazing land fenced off with robust oak.

At the front, the farmhouse is flanked by two monumental lindens. The views of the estate from the old part of the house are simply incredible. This part of the house includes the master bedroom with its en-suite bathroom, finished in a robust style and featuring a double washbasin, a walk-in shower, and a free-standing bath. The former bed box is now a luxury walk-in closet. The authentic mantelpieces in the bedroom and bathroom remind of the “old days”. The same goes for the extra room downstairs (accessed via a few steps), which is a comfortable home office, and the adjacent drawing-room. Below these rooms is a cool basement. The former stables have been converted into a gorgeous and spacious living room. The old trusses are still there, but the old stable doors are replaced by an arched glass façade, making the space wonderfully light. The modern, country-style kitchen, designed by Lodder Keukens, features a granite worktop and top-range appliances (Gaggenau) and will be the dream of every keen cook. The kitchen and living area are separated by a room divider with an integrated gas-fuelled fireplace. The white goods connections are neatly tucked away in the utility room. The door leading outside gives access to the paved terrace with colourful flower borders.

The first floor offers three generously sized bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and fitted wardrobes in the same sleek style, as well as a separate lavatory and an infra-red sauna. The farmhouse includes various installations, such as a heat pump and a ventilation system, to improve the sustainability of the property.

The old baking shed, located next to the main house, has been carefully restored and converted to create a comfortable and cosy office/artist's studio. This robust outbuilding now offers two separate spaces and includes a good-sized and luxury lavatory.

At the front part of the plot, at a right angle to the farmhouse, is a thatched outbuilding that used to be the deep litter stable. This building has also been extensively renovated and reconfigured, and now offers two horse stables, a saddle room, a pantry, a lavatory, and plenty of space to store garden equipment and tools. The plot is separated from the public dirt road by a COR-TEN steel gate showing a playful pattern of cut-out linden leaves.

Living in such a peaceful location right in the heart of the Netherlands truly is a privilege. The ‘De Wijsßelsche Encke’ estate, on the edge of the protected Meibeek valley, is a genuine piece of paradise.
