A SYMMETRICAL PLEASURE
‘The truth lies in the middle’. This text can be read in the manor near a collection of old maps of the area. Not just the truth, but also the beautiful Kastanjehof is located right in the middle: in the centre of the square Utrecht-Amersfoort-Apeldoorn-Arnhem and at an interesting distance from the Randstad.
Once inside the boundaries of the 18.5 acre NSW estate, however, the Randstad is nowhere to be found. The beautiful, parklike garden has a royal allure, simply from the outstretched loam pond, landscapes as a Grand Canal with symmetrical flanking yew columns and boxwood bulbs. But there is more: old oaks and chestnut trees, fruit trees, catalpa trees and acacias, a jewel of a rose garden, a toad pool, a sheep meadow, a tennis court and a valley with a romantic heath, surrounded by ‘white Weird Sisters’ i.e. juniper bushes. There is even a ha-ha (saut-de-loup), allowing a ‘fenceless’ view of the own forest. With a horse, you can easily go from an equestrian trail of this forest into the vast Luntersche Buurtbosch. It is not surprising that from the house there is a lot to see of the beautiful garden and the little woods. In addition, there are four spacious verandas, ensuring that there is always a sunny spot to be found.
Frank Lloyd Wright
The current owners found a blueprint of their manor in the shape of a scale model in a Parisian display window. The designer of this was Frank Lloyd Wright and his ideas can certainly be found in the estate Kastanjehof (1999). The famous architect Dr Ir. Egbert Hoogenberk used reddish brown brick with accents of Belgian freestone, slightly inclined, slate covered roofs and the typical large roof overhang. The entire house has been constructed symmetrically on an increase, modelled on a Groningen ‘borg’ (castle/stronghold), with two identical side wings. The most important space in the middle house is the spacious sitting room with round bay window, looking out to the garden. Next to it is the large SieMatic kitchen diner with modern devices. The beautiful entrance immediately introduces you to the used sustainable materials: magnificent marble on the floor, hardwood doors and natural stone. The master bedroom is located on the ground floor and has a spacious walk-in closet and a large bathroom, furnished with Italian design. In this wing there is also a separate entrance and a spacious office with a secretary to provide guests with a royal welcome there as well. The basement features a large training or meeting room featuring a colossal pit with three double patio doors, a wine cellar and a play cellar with a library and pantry. In addition, there are two spacious, identical bedrooms, each with an own bathroom and a spacious balcony with amazing view on the estate. The swimming pool with sundeck is situated in the other wing and can be changed easily in an outdoor swimming pool. The orangery in the garden, with a sitting room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom, can serve as a guesthouse or as a house for the au pair. The Kastanjehof truly offers everything for lovely living pleasure with the highest amount of privacy.
