Description

Strijthagen Castle Complex is a completely intact estate in the municipality of Landgraaf, situated in the for many undiscovered Strijthagerbeek valley. The 18th century main building was built on the site of an older castle and lies on the banks of several ponds fed by the Strijthagerbeek. You will not only be the new owner of the castle but also of the steward's house. The history goes back to the 13th century, which is still present when you walk across the estate. With respect for the many authentic elements, Kasteel Strijthagen has been converted into a multifunctional object with contemporary comfort. Living is enjoyed, possibly combined with working or an accommodation function.

Already in publications of the 13th century the estate is mentioned. There have been many changes in the rich history of the castle, both in the shape of the castle itself but also the change of the very different owners that the castle has had. Owners who pass in review are the owner of the Oranje Nassaumijnen and the artist Aad de Haas who lived at the castle with his family for many years. After a number of changes, the Landgrave municipality became the owner and they sold the estate to the current owners, the Russian artist duo Alexander and Katya Taratynov. The castle is completely furnished as a 26-person holiday home, in the middle of a beautiful pond park. The entire complex of Strijthagen includes the castle, a 17th century outer castle, a steward's house and many acres of woods and several fish ponds and a gigantic art exhibition.

When Alexander and Katja visited the castle in 2015, they said it was a sad spectacle. The entire courtyard of the outer castle was a true forest, all gardens were completely overgrown, not to mention the state of the buildings. For two years they worked hard to restore the castle to its former glory, preserving as much as possible of the beautiful old elements. And of course with his own signature; Alexander is a famous Russian-Dutch sculptor and his wife Katja is a painter. Their art is literally present in all rooms of Kasteel Strijthagen. Alexander is known for his immense bronze creations. Perhaps best known is his three-dimensional version of Rembrandt's Night Watch. If you think that the original is located on the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam, then you are wrong. The original is displayed directly in front of the stairwell of Strijthagen Castle.

When you arrive at the estate you enter through the gate the courtyard of the outer castle, a white U-shaped farmhouse. In the courtyard there are also a number of large bronze works of art by Alexander. On the right side you enter the grounds of Strijthagen Castle via a second fence. Here you will find the 16 members of the Night Watch who seem to watch over the castle. On the right side of the castle in the terra coloured steward's house the owners live with their two daughters.

Castle
The facades of the castle are interrupted by stone layers of marl and the mansard roof construction is covered with slates. The floors in the castle are finished with marble, partly in mosaic, wooden floorboards and parquet. The ornamental stucco ceilings, plastered walls with paintings and ornamental elements contribute, together with the (marble) fireplaces, to the rich history that characterize Kasteel Strijthagen. At the same time, there is contemporary living comfort thanks to the air treatment installation and several HE boilers that provide heating and hot water. Commissioned by the current owners, a Russian artist duo, the castle has been restored to its former glory while retaining many beautiful old elements and its own signature. In every room you can find the art that makes Kasteel Strijthagen so unique.

Ground floor:
Through the stair portal at the front of the castle you reach the imposing hall. Above the wide wooden staircase hang 4 large works of art by Katja, one of the owners of Kasteel Strijthagen, which symbolize the 4 seasons. There are several rooms on the ground floor to live in a unique ensemble.

First floor:
On the first floor there are four double rooms, each with its own theme that suits the style and allure of the Castle. One of the bedrooms has a private bathroom and from the landing a second bathroom can be reached, covered with Spanish wall tiles and with all the necessary amenities; a bath, shower, toilet and a washbasin. There is also a large meeting room on this floor that can be used for various purposes.

Second floor:
On the second floor, which can be reached via two staircases, there are five more bedrooms. There are two bedrooms for four persons, each with its own bathroom. In addition, there are three double bedrooms, also with a private bathroom. All rooms are beautiful, so you can sleep under the 6 meter high roof chair with old rafters and a view up to the ridge. Also on this floor is a second living room with a kitchen, ideal for a living family, an au-pair or to use for the accommodation function.

Basement:
Surprising is the basement of exceptional beauty where you can enjoy a piece of wellness. Here is the sauna room with a Finnish sauna, a double shower and a relaxation area with two sun loungers.

Steward's house
The steward's house has a distinguished appearance, charming wooden window shutters and a wooden roof construction covered with slates, just like the castle. The steward's house also has all the necessary amenities including heating and hot water via an energy efficient boiler. The house has a warm terra color on the outside and is built on the castle.

Ground floor:
On the ground floor are two bedrooms, a bathroom, toilet and a beautiful hall with an impressive staircase to the upper floors.

First floor:
Taste the character, atmosphere and luxury that make the steward's house a beautiful place. From the landing are two bedrooms, an attic room, toilet and a second bathroom to reach.

Second floor:
The top floor with imposing roof construction is a large attic room with several storage rooms and a toilet. Thanks to the dormers with windows on four sides, this floor can be used for many purposes.

Castle farm
The semi-closed farmstead, built in a U-shape, borders the farm complex on one side. Striking is the roof of the gatehouse, covered with slates and fitted with a clock system. Part of the castle farm has been transformed into 7 apartments and a catering area with a professional kitchen. The north side of the castle farm has been designed as an exhibition space divided over the ground floor and first floor.
The layout, several entrances, many windows and the present facilities make the castle farm for many purposes to use. We advise you to discuss your desired use with the Landgraaf municipality. Living, working, exhibiting ... the possibilities are unprecedented.
