Estate Den Hoogen Gaerde is located in the rural area between De Wijk and Balkbrug (near hamlet Oud-Avereest), by the meandering rivulet De Reest, which forms the border between Drenthe and Overijssel.
Nature area Het Reestdal (+ Staphorster Bos) is a beautiful hike and cycling area, centrally located between the gorgeous national parks De Weerribben (Giethoorn; water sports), Het Dwingelderveld, and Het Lemelerveld (Vechtdal, Ommen).

The construction on the estate includes a monumental thatched farmhouse with integral garage, a connected shed and various detached outbuildings.

The monumental farmhouse dates from 1806 and was renovated and expanded a number of times throughout the year.

The object acquired the status of ‘National Monument’ in 1980.
After various purchases of lands and woodlands, the total surface area became 11.5 HA and was awarded the fiscally beneficial status of ‘NSW estate’ in accordance with the Estates Act 1928 in 2004.

All buildings feature fire/burglary alarm systems as well as lighting with movement sensors all around.

The object is connected to the fibre optic cable system of the outlying area of the Municipality of Hardenberg.

North of the farm in the horse meadow a field setup of 54 solar panels has been placed, which generates a considerable amount of the electricity needs.

The structural conditions are checked by the Netherlands Monuments Watch Foundation Overijssel-Flevoland once every two years. The recommendations for maintenance are followed promptly.

Annual maintenance is performed on the technical systems on an annual basis.

There is a large park-like yard with many characteristic old oaks and adjacent horse meadow.

Access to the yard is restricted by means of a remote control electronic majestic wooden access gate with intercom.

The house consists of a square high front structure with original entrance and view on Het Reestdal.
The residential area behind was completely renewed in the large renovation in 1982, for which modern construction techniques were used, also when it comes to insulation.
The farm was then rebuilt into a very luxurious farmhouse with large, atmospheric quarters (a ‘rural villa’, so to speak) with very modern residential comfort.
Authentic elements were kept in the renovation, such as frame structures and walls featuring antique tiles (+ tile tableaus).
The entire house features antique tiles, with floor heating below it.
The generously sized living room consists of three segments: audio and TV, social and library, and offers a view on the pond.
There is a very spacious kitchen diner with all required modern kitchen appliances, a stately dining salon and a very atmospheric master bedroom with view on Het Reestdal.
This is connected to a large, very luxurious bathroom featuring two-person whirlpool and two-person Turkish steam bath/cabin.
There are guest quarters (bedroom; bathroom with bathtub).
Furthermore, there is a large wine cellar (with cooling system).

The house has systems to increase residential comfort, including a high tech system of climate/air treatment with control of atmospheric humidity, air heat pump, floor heating and air conditioning.
In addition, there are atmospheric, authentic hearths with wood-burning fireplaces in nearly all residential spaces. There is a panorama fireplace in the living room.
There is an advanced B&O audio-video system with connection in most quarters.

Perpendicular to the house is a large, authentic, thatched weatherboard wooden shed featuring wicker on the outside walls.

There is a heated garage with space for two cars, bicycles etc.

There are various outbuildings on the terrain, including a former bakery (orangery), a hunting lodge, an outbuilding in use as office/guest accommodation, a wooden coach house and a high wooden barn (to park vehicles and vessels).
All outbuildings are constructed in an authentic method, which includes the use of trusses, weatherboards and reed or authentic roof tiles.
The outbuilding/office/guest accommodation was constructed in 2010/2011 and is a house in itself. It is built in the same style as the main building with lots of attention to insulation. It includes a heated basement.

A majestic driveway, illuminated by antique lanterns, leads to the very beautiful garden (approx. 3 HA).
The park is completely surrounded with beautiful rhododendrons and there is a flower/vegetable garden, an orchard with fruit trees and a natural swimming pond.
There are various lighting elements with movement sensors on the yard, as well as many connection points for electricity, multiple frost-free outdoor taps (including some with both hot and cold water) and two outside showers.

Located adjacent to the yard is a horse meadow (a spacious 1 HA) featuring electric fencing.

Adjacent to that is a wooded walking area with well maintained paths.
